Does the BMI Calculator say you are overweight?

You and many others will have had the same outcome.

Some of our members recently having their over 40 Health check, were disheartened by the outcome as they have been looking after their health and regulars at our gym lifting weights.

The BMI (body mass index), uses your height and weight to determine if you are within a healthy weight range, and should only be used as a guide. A normal BMI would be between 18.5 and 25, anything between 25 and 30 is considered overweight, and anything over 30 is considered obese.

What it doesn’t take into account is a person’s body fat versus muscle content. If you were to compare 1lb of muscle with 1lb of fat, the muscle would show much smaller in size because is it denser. For this reason, lots of athletes are classed as overweight using the BMI calculation, so it doesn’t work for them.

I did my own BMI calculation based on my height and weight, and mine is 24.7, which suggests I am ‘a healthy weight’, but at the higher end, and I should ‘keep an eye on my weight’. If I put on less than 1kg, I will be classed as overweight

As you can see, I am not overweight, I am fit, strong and healthy. My height is 5.2” and a dress size 10.

So, if you are looking after your nutrition, exercising regularly, and feel good in yourself, and your clothes, you do not need a BMI calculator or a set of scales to pull you back and ruin your day.
